To ensure that everyone in Grande Prairie has warm clothes this winter, Art Gallery of Grande Prairie is accepting coats, scarves, mitts and socks as well as personal hygiene products such as toothpaste, soap and shampoo. The goods will be given to Rotary House after the donation deadline on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m.
Jennifer Fisher of the gallery hopes to collect enough clothing and toiletries to provide for all of the Rotary House’s temporary and long-term residents.
“The goal that I have is to get at least enough clothing for about 150 to 200 people,” she said. “A lot of the main things they need when they’re living on the streets are warm clothing, and they often don’t have some of the basic necessities like dry warm socks and toques, scarves, mitts and jackets. In -30 or -40 temperatures when they’re out, it’s always good to have warm clothing.”
Fisher got the idea for the clothing drive from her experience working last November with The Mustard Seed, a Calgary outreach organization that disperses clothing and hygiene products to people on the streets.
“I figured (the clothing drive) would be a really good way to get something like that in Grande Prairie,” she said.
“We are a much smaller city, so I figured with something like this going out to the Rotary House, they would be able to deal with it as they saw fit.”
