November 1 - 10, 2008

Artist Nicole Bauberger will be at the Grande Prairie Regional College for an artist residency. She will be creatting 100 paintings of dresses in 10 days. They are painted in encaustic, a form of painting with melted beeswax and pigment, fused to a surface with heat. The public is invited to watch her brush, layer, scrape, carve, and sometimes embed found objects in the wax to make one hundred small paintings of dresses.
Nicole will be at the Grande Prairie Regional College in the Pillars area November 1-10, 2008.
All of the paintings will be exhibited in the Glass Gallery at Grande Prairie Regional College from November 14 -24, 2008.
Bauberger thinks of the 100 Dresses projects as a kind of landscape painting. She pays attention to the experience of being in a particular place at a particular time, and makes small dress paintings inspired by that experience. Dress titles range from Flat Tire Dress to Dress of last light catching on the hills. The project includes items not only from the landscape as it’s normally understood, but also from the human landscape, the stories, hopes and worries Bauberger overhears from people living at this time and place. The names are important, and are written on the wall beside the dresses.
In addition to these, Bauberger welcomes “Guest Dresses” made by members of the community. Join her during advertised hours and you can try your hand at the wax. If you like, you can leave it as part of the “Guest Dress” portion of the exhibition, to pick up at the show’s end. It will be installed in the Glass Gallery at Grande Prairie Regional College with the name you give the dress, and your name, written on the wall beside it.
