By ERIC PLUMMER, Daily Herald-Tribune staff

To ensure that everyone in Grande Prairie has warm clothes this winter, Prairie Art Gallery is accepting coats, scarves, mitts and socks as well as personal hygiene products such as toothpaste, soap and shampoo. The goods will be given to Rotary House after the donation deadline on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m.

Jennifer Fisher of the gallery hopes to collect enough clothing and toiletries to provide for all of the Rotary House’s temporary and long-term residents.

“The goal that I have is to get at least enough clothing for about 150 to 200 people,” she said. “A lot of the main things they need when they’re living on the streets are warm clothing, and they often don’t have some of the basic necessities like dry warm socks and toques, scarves, mitts and jackets. In -30 or -40 temperatures when they’re out, it’s always good to have warm clothing.”

Fisher got the idea for the clothing drive from her experience working last November with The Mustard Seed, a Calgary outreach organization that disperses clothing and hygiene products to people on the streets.

“I figured (the clothing drive) would be a really good way to get something like that in Grande Prairie,” she said.

“We are a much smaller city, so I figured with something like this going out to the Rotary House, they would be able to deal with it as they saw fit.”

Announcement from the Gallery:

Give the Gift of Kindness

The Prairie Art Gallery and the Rotary House are working together this winter season to bring the gift of kindness to those in need. Our a goal is to provide gently used winter coats, toques, scarves, mitts, socks and personal hygiene products; so that no man, woman or child will go without their basic needs this winter.

If you have items to give, we encourage you to drop them off at the Prairie Art Gallery. The deadline for donations will be December 10, 2010 at 6:00pm. For more information, please contact the Prairie Art Gallery at (780) 532-8111.

Opening reception: November 4, 2010 at 7:00 pm
Location: Kin Gallery, located at the Heritage Discover Centre in Centre 2000, 11330-106 Street, Grande Prairie.

In this exhibition, which is composed of works created by members of the Prairie Art Gallery, and chosen for exhibition entirely by the individual creators of the work with no interference whatsoever from the Gallery, we are proud to show a snapshot of some of the most current and active production of visual culture by artists at all levels of their careers working in this region. The Prairie Art gallery believes that art is among the most important components of a society, and as such that the art made in our community is an important component of our community. The works in this exhibition are as diverse and eclectic as the individual artists who have made them, and we hope they represent much of the diversity of the community. Yet each work, being of this place, should resonate both with the place of its creation and with the other works of art created in that place. The harmony that emerges from this range of voices is in itself a way of understanding Grande Prairie and the Peace Region.

The members’ exhibition has been a long and proud tradition for the Prairie Art Gallery and its members, and like all of the Gallery’s important programs, the members’ exhibition will be transformed by the growth of the organization that is currently underway. This exhibition is a sign that there will always be a place in the Prairie Art Gallery for unmitigated contact between artists practising in this region and the public audience, but it is also a milestone in that this is the final members’ only exhibition that will be held by the Prairie Art Gallery for the foreseeable future. It is our goal to reduce barriers between artists, art, and the audience, and as such, future exhibitions of this type will be open to all creators in the community, and no longer restricted to members.

We thank all of the artists who have so generously loaned their works to this exhibition, and we also thank the City of Grande Prairie and the Heritage Discovery Centre for the loan of this space in our time of need.
